Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Muang Airport, Bringing People to Bangkok
Bangkok is a major Asian hub that acts as a stopover city and a transfer point, as well as a leading tourist destination in its own right. With a population of over 15 million people, Bangkok is served by two main Bangkok airports. Suvarnabhumi Airport handles most of the international traffic, having replaced Don Mueang Airport, which now serves as an air force base and the hub for several discount airlines.
After many delays, caused by financial and political concerns and even ghost stories, Survanabhumi Airport was finally opened in 2005. Since taking over as the city’s number one airport in 2006 and adopting the BKK airport code, most international flights to Bangkok now fly there. It is a modern airport that only has one terminal, but it is one of the largest airport terminals in the world.
It has all modern airport facilities, and it boasts a high-speed rail link that connects it to the city in as little as 15 minutes. The airport is also connected to the city through several bus routes and, of course, Bangkok’s ubiquitous taxi and tuk-tuk service. Survanabhumi handles flights to and from destinations throughout Asia and further afield to Europe, Africa and the Pacific Rim.
The number of hotels near the airport has mushroomed in recent times, and this trend looks likely to continue. These tend to fall into the mid to upper range, with most budget accommodation still located within the city.
Don Mueang was Bangkok’s main airport until Suvarnabhumi took over in 2006. It was one of the world’s oldest international airports, having been opened in 1914. It was the home of Thai Airways and, at its peak, was one of the two busiest airports in Asia with around 80,000 flights from Bangkok each year.
The intention was to close Don Mueang when Suvarnabhumi was opened, but numerous problems at the new airport caused Don Mueang to be reopened. Its operations are now concentrated on domestic flights, charter flights and low-cost international airlines.
Connections for the 20-kilometre journey to the city from Don Mueang are less apparent and efficient since the changeover. There are still taxis, of course, and the train link remains open.
