Airports in London: London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and London City
London is one of the most famous cities in the world and has numerous airports that connect it to the wider world. The most widely known are London Gatwick (LGW) and London Heathrow (LHR). However, there are several other busy airports such as Stansted, Luton and London City airport. In addition to the London airports proper, there are also airports that are not part of London but which connect to the city, making them viable for visitors to London to use.
London Heathrow is the largest and busiest of the airports and has a reputation as the busiest airport in Europe. It has five terminals and a constant stream of visitors. Although there are occasionally delays and confusion over the terminal numbers, the airport is remarkable efficient considering its amount of passengers.
Lots of public transport connects it to the city – the rail system is the easiest to negotiate, but taxis, buses and shuttle are also widely available.
Gatwick airport is the next largest, and is easily accessible from the motorway. The airport is again serviced by an effective rail system, and there is also a good express coach service.
Stansted airport is the third largest airport. Stansted is a little further away from the main city than the others and so is not as well served by a transport system. Budget flights from London tend to be from Stansted. Because of the distance from the city and the affordable flights this is the London airport most likely to see passengers prepared to spend a night sleeping in the terminal.
Luton airport is a smaller airport but also has some low-cost airlines flying from it. London City airport meanwhile is a smaller airport and has fewer flights than other London airports. This airport is near the river, close to the financial area, and so those who use it tend to be business travelers.
