Miami and Fort Lauderdale International Flights
Travelers to Miami can fly into the city through one of two airports—either Miami International Airport or Fort Lauderdale International Airport.
Miami International Airport is on the west side of Miami, due west of Miami Beach. It is a busy airport, due to its role as a hub for air traffic between Latin America and North America, and can get congested at times. However, security checks are very efficient and move a lot of people through quickly.
Miami International Airport has seven terminals. This airport is a major hub for American Airlines and Terminal D is dedicated exclusively to it.
American Airlines flies directly from Miami to most major cities in the Americas, in addition to some major European cities. Terminals E, C and F handle international airlines, Terminal G handles some of the smaller regional airlines and Terminal H handles Delta Airlines, as well as several international airlines. Terminal J handles traffic from United Airlines and US Airways.
The amenities at Miami International Airport are many and travelers will be able to find ATMs, post offices, currency exchange booths and WiFi, as well as several bars and restaurants spread throughout all seven of the terminals.
Fort Lauderdale International Airport is located less than an hour north of Miami, but its less-convenient location is made up for by the speed through which you can navigate the airport because of its smaller size and fewer flights. Fort Lauderdale International Airport doesn’t handle as many international flights as Miami International Airports, but many of the budget airlines, including Southwest Airlines and JetBlue, favor Fort Lauderdale Airport over the Miami Airport.
If you’re planning a trip to Miami, it would be a good idea to check the cost of arriving at either destination to see if one gives you a lower fare.
Fort Lauderdale International Airport has four terminals, each with one or two concourses. Terminal 1 has concourses B, which is for smaller regional airlines, and C, which is dedicated almost exclusively to Continental. Concourse D, which handles Air Canada, Allegiant Air and Delta, is in Terminal 2. Concourses E and F are in Terminal 3. Air Tran Airways and US Airways fly into Concourse E, and American and some smaller regional airlines fly into Concourse F.
