JFK, Newark and LaGuardia Airports Serving New York City and the World


Due to its massive metro area and international importance, New York City is served by three major airports, two international and one domestic. Located about 12 miles from lower Manhattan, John F. Kennedy International is the largest, with more than eighty airlines operating in nine busy terminals designed in a large circular shape. JFK is a major hub for aviation giants such as JetBlue, American Airlines, and Delta, and its top international routes include London, Paris, and Tokyo. Top domestic routes include Los Angeles, Orlando, and Miami.


Many frequent visitors or New York area natives sometimes avoid flying through JFK because of its crowds of international travelers. The popular New York airport is extraordinarily busy at most hours of the day. It’s recommended that you arrive with plenty of time to spare. JFK is typically packed at all times of the day, so don’t expect to avoid the crowds by flying at any particular time. Getting to and from JFK can be a time consuming due to traffic and construction.

If you’re driving from the airport, make sure to follow the signs closely. Inaugurated in 2003, the Airtrain links JFK to MTA subway lines via Howard Beach and Jamaica. It takes about 1 hour to arrive in Grand Central when you connect. Airtrain is a good, cheap travel option if you don’t have too much luggage and know how to navigate the subway. Taxis with flat fees to Manhattan can be found outside any terminal. New York City’s other major international airport is Newark, located about 18 miles southwest of Manhattan. It’s the second largest hub for Continental, the airport’s main carrier serving destinations all over the world. Like JFK, Newark is very busy and travelers should take that into consideration when planning trips through this airport. It is sometimes faster to clear customs here than at JFK. Newark also has a reliable and affordable Airtrain which connects to Penn Station and any New Jersey line station in between. Newark has a large Marriot hotel in its airport complex for overnight accommodations.

The smallest of the three airports, LaGuardia, is significantly the closest to downtown Manhattan. Laguardia Airport is a popular airport for traveling thought NYC domestically. Just a twenty minute drive from downtown, Laguardia presents fewer delays getting into the city than do JFK and Newark. Laguardia’s four terminals offer frequent domestic flights, many designed to accommodate business travelers, to cities like Boston, Washington DC and Philadelphia.
