Orlando International Airport or Orlando-Sanford International Airport to Disney World

Orlando, America’s theme park capital and one of Florida’s largest cities, has two major airports that serve the metropolitan area. The largest Orlando airport is Orlando International and the secondary one is the confusingly similar Orlando-Sanford International Airport. While one is full of history, the second provides low cost flights.

Orlando International Airport is Florida’s busiest airport and among the 25 busiest airports in the world in terms of passenger traffic. It was originally built as a military base during World War II and played a role in the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 but has settled in recent years for being a major commercial airport and the ‘gateway to Disney World.’ The airport is designed around a large central terminal that is connected to four smaller terminals (known as ‘airsides’) via an internal tram system.

Airsides 1 and 4 receive most of the international flights to Orlando, which arrive daily from across Canada and the Caribbean and from European cities such as London, Glasgow and Frankfurt. There are domestic flights from Orlando to towns and cities across the United States, particularly the central and eastern states. Orlando commuter traffic is among the busiest in the country and is best avoided wherever possible. There are regular buses on the LYNX public transport system to popular Orlando destinations. There is a bus to and from Disney World for guests at the resort’s hotels, and most mid-level and luxury hotels have transfer shuttles. Some of the major cruise lines also offer free transport to and from their ships. Other options for getting away from the airport include taking a taxi or renting a car; Orlando has the largest rental car market in the world. After Las Vegas, Orlando has the most hotel rooms in the United States, so finding a room should be no problem. There is even a Hyatt hotel inside the airport itself.

Summer and public holidays are the busiest times at Orlando International when check-in and security queues can become very long, so it is wise to arrive two or three hours before your flight. Orlando-Sanford International Airport is located in the town of Sanford, north of Orlando. From a commercial perspective, it handles a lot more flights to Orlando from Europe – particularly the UK – than Orlando International does, and a lot of these are via discount airlines. There are many regular services to London, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Dublin, Belfast, and even Reykjavik, to cater to the large influx of tourists during the British winter.
